How to Calculate Bookbinding Signatures

When printing a PDF to bind into a physical book, you cannot simply print pages 1 through 100 in order. Books are constructed by folding large sheets of paper in half to create "signatures" (or folios), which are then nested, sewn together, and glued at the spine. If you fold 4 sheets of paper in half and nest them, you create a 16-page signature: 4 sheets, 8 leaves, 16 printed sides. How do you calculate text block thickness for bookbinding?

Text block thickness = Number of leaves × Caliper per leaf. A leaf is one piece of paper and carries 2 pages, so a 200-page book has 100 leaves. At 0.004" per leaf (standard 80gsm paper), the text block is 0.4" thick. That figure is paper alone: a case spine also needs board thickness (typically 0.08" × 2 = 0.16") plus the joint gaps, so measure the finished block before cutting cover wrap.

How many blank pages do I need to pad a signature?

A book's total page count must be divisible by the signature size. If your content is 97 pages and you use 8-page signatures, you need 104 pages total (13 signatures × 8). That means 7 blank padding pages, placed at the back of the book after your last content page. Blanks at the front have to be added in whole leaves, 2 pages at a time, or content page 1 lands on a left-hand page and every spread in the book reverses.
