Generic rules of thumb (like "1 foot of cord per 1 inch of bracelet") only work for basic 2-core Cobra weaves. Real paracord weaving requires accounting for four distinct structural components:

  • Effective Weave Length (Lweave): The band has to close around the wrist, so its centreline runs one weave thickness longer than the wrist itself; the buckle then fills part of that loop and leaves less to knot. Lweave = C + π × t - Ahardware, where C is the circumference, t the finished weave thickness, and Ahardware the mated buckle's overall length along the strap. A wrap along a knife tang is not a closed loop and takes neither term: Lweave = C.
  • Core Strand Backbone (Lcore): The static longitudinal cord strands running between buckles. Lcore = Lweave × Ncore.
  • Active Knotting Weave (Lknot): The working strands consuming cordage around the core strands. Lknot = Lweave × Rweave.
